How to Clean Hair Out of a Drain

Hair is one of the common causes of clogged drains, as it can bind with soap scum, grease, and other sticky substances to form drain clogs. Hair clogs can prevent your drain pipes from draining properly and lead to backups.

In this article, we will walk you through some of the effective ways to get hair out of a drain.

  • Remove The Hair Clog by Hand, Tweezer, or Wire Hanger

If the hair clog is within reach and you have easy access to your drain, you can use needle-nose pliers, a pair of tweezers, or a wire hanger to get hair out of the drain. First, youll need to wear a pair of gloves and remove the drain cover. After that, locate the clog using a flashlight and pull it out using your hands and dispose. For harder-to-reach clogs, use a wire hanger or a pair of tweezers to remove the clogs and flush the drain with one liter of hot water.

  • Flush The Drain with Hot Water

Pouring hot water directly down the drain can help dissolve the substances that may be causing the hair to clump together.

  • Use Baking Soda and Vinegar

Pour a cup of vinegar down the drain followed by a cup of baking soda. Wait for about five minutes and follow it up with a flush of hot water. This combination causes an acidic reaction that can help dissolve the hair down the drain.

  • Use A Snaking Device

If dissolving the clog with hot water or pouring a cup of baking soda and vinegar into the drain doesnt clear the clog. Insert a plumbers snake into the drain and rotate the handle clockwise. Keep pushing the snake into the drain until you reach the blockage. Once youve reached the obstruction, hook the clog and pull the snake out of the drain.

  • Call A Drain Cleaning Service

If the above-mentioned methods do not do the trick, its advisable to call an experienced plumber to help you with drain cleaning. A dependable plumber is equipped with advanced draining cleaning tools and technology to get rid of clogs made from hair, food, grease, soap scum, and other items.

How to Avoid Hair Clogs in Your Drain

  • Brush or comb your hair to remove the loose hairs that would otherwise clog your drains. If youre not planning to wash your hair, wear a shower cap to prevent hair from going down your drains.
  • Install a drain cover in every shower or tub in your home to catch the majority of hair before it slips down the drain.
