Kitchen Sink Not Draining? Here Are 6 Ways to Unclog It

There’s nothing quite as frustrating as a kitchen sink that won’t drain, rendering meal preparation, dishwashing, and daily cleanup nearly impossible. A clogged kitchen sink doesn’t just slow down your routine; it can also lead to unpleasant odors, standing water, and even water damage. Fortunately, minor kitchen sink clogs are easy to clear on your own with some DIY know-how.

In this guide, Mr. Rooter Plumbing explores six ways to clear a blocked kitchen sink. You’ll learn DIY methods like plunging, snaking, baking soda and vinegar treatments, and more to restore your sink to good working condition. If DIY methods do not work, consult with a skilled and experienced plumber.

  • Boiling Water

If your sink is draining slowly but isn’t completely blocked, boiling water can dissolve the grease or soap scum causing the clog. Pour a kettle of water directly into the drain in stages and allow it to work for several seconds between pours. This method works best for minor clogs caused by grease or soap buildup.

  • Baking Soda and Vinegar

Pour about half a cup of baking soda down the drain and follow it up with a cup of white vinegar. The mixture will fizz and bubble as it breaks down gunk and grime. Let it sit for 15–30 minutes, then flush the drain with hot water. It’s a safe and eco-friendly way to tackle many common clogs.

  • Plunge the Drain

A sink plunger can be incredibly effective for dislodging stubborn clogs. Make sure there’s enough water in the sink to cover the plunger’s bell, then position the plunger over the drain and plunge for 30 seconds to a minute. If you have a double sink, block the other drain with a stopper or cloth to ensure maximum pressure.

  • Check the Garbage Disposal

If your kitchen sink has a garbage disposal, it could be the source of the clog. Try running the disposal to see if it clears up the blockage. If it hums but doesn’t spin, you may need to manually reset it using the reset button underneath or use an Allen wrench to rotate the motor manually. Be sure to unplug the unit or cut the power before attempting any maintenance. However, complex garbage disposal problems should be left to an experienced plumbing service.

  • Clean the P-Trap

Place a bucket under the trap to catch water, then loosen the slip nuts with a wrench or by hand. Remove the trap and clean out any debris inside. Reassemble and test the drain. This method can resolve clogs that are too stubborn for plunging or natural cleaners.

  • Use a Drain Snake

If none of the above drain cleaning methods work, a drain snake, also known as a plumber’s auger, might do the trick. Insert the snake into the drain and turn the handle to push it through the pipe. Once you feel resistance, rotate to break up or hook the clog, then pull it out and flush with water.
